Barker's Island comes alive as dragons invade during the 10th annual Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival.

The Barker's Island boat launch, swimming beach and fishing platform are closed Friday and Saturday to conduct the festival.

The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is free for spectators. While foot traffic is welcome, vehicular traffic onto the island Friday evening and Saturday is limited to accommodate festivities.

Barker's Island Inn, Barker's Island Marina, the Ship's Store, and Charter Fishing operations are open and available to the public, as well as the SS Meteor and Captain J's Miniature Golf on the northwest end of the island.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution along the East Second Street corridor this weekend. Posted speed limits drop to 25 mph from Belknap Street to 18th Avenue East, and pedestrians will be allowed to cross at Belknap Street or Ninth Avenue East. Members of the Superior Police Auxiliary assist with pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow.

Public parking is restricted on Barker's Island. A free shuttle to the festival runs from Mariner Mall parking lot, 69 N. 28th St. The shuttle picks up on the south side of the mall near Ember's Restaurant from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Festival-goers are encouraged to park at the mall and use the free shuttle to alleviate congestion in the festival area; however, they are asked to avoid parking near the theaters.

Because of construction on Belknap Street, shuttle users are encouraged to take 18th Avenue East to the Mariner Mall.

Accessible handicap transportation onto the island is available from the fishing platform — designated for handicap parking — on the mainland.
